More Father- Son Success in SC

What a Day!
My name is Larry Miller from Hemingway South Carolina. Last Saturday I woke up to lights shining in my window. I had overslept. I knew it was my son Bob….he had driven an hour to come turkey hunting with me. I had to hustle to get dressed and out into the woods. My wife Connie and I had roosted a nice Tom the night before so I had an idea where we needed to set up to get Bob his first turkey. We got to a place called Tator Hill, set up on a hedge row across the field where the bird had roosted, and waited. There’s nothing like waiting for the woods to wake up with the rising sun listening for a turkey to gobble. We had a couple of hens fly down about 200 yards away, then the great sound of a gobble. I did some calling and brought the hens right towards us. Guess who followed? You got it….what a beautiful sight and wonderful feeling to see that Tom strutting and showing off for those hens. I was feeling apprehensive waiting on that Tom. I really wanted Bob to get this turkey. He had been hunting by himself several times, but had not harvested a turkey. I wanted to be the one that was there to help him. It took that old Tom over an hour to get across that field. We had hens within spitting distance from us and then he decided to veer off to the right. I whispered to Bob….”take the shot son”. He replied, ” it’s too far Dad”. When he turned to tell me that, I stuck both fingers in my ears….he knew that was the signal. He blasted that bird at 63 yards, and then took off running towards the bird. When he got to the bird, he flew, and Bob took another shot. What a great sight. My son Bob with his first turkey!

Later that afternoon we had driven to town to eat lunch, and on the way home decided to go to a field where we had seen a group of turkeys hanging out in the late afternoon. My wife Connie was with us so we decided to go build a blind and sit for a while. She wanted to film Bob and I, because I had not harvested a bird yet this year and Bob being a novice hunter she was being a mother instead of a hunter. Anyway, we set up, got the camera set up, and started calling. We heard a couple of gobbles!! Holy smokes! The turkeys sounded close. Bob and I had decided if there was more than one Tom, I would shoot the one on the left, and he would take the one on the right. All of a sudden there they were….two gobblers coming at a run to our decoys. I said ready…shoot….and Bob shot on shoot. My bird started running, but I got him on the run. What an awesome hunt! My son and I shooting two turkeys at the same time. His second turkey, and my first of the year. Family bonding in the outdoors….what could be better! Connie got it all on film, and I think she was more excited than we were. One post script. Bob had been hunting several times in this area, and kept seeing this turkey he called “Johnny Cash”. The nickname came from the turkeys feathers…there was a really light colored ring on the tips of the tail feathers. Bob called it the “ring of fire”, one of Johnny Cash’s most remembered songs. Well….Bob’s turkey was “Johnny Cash” He had an 11 1/4 inch beard and 1 1/2 spurs. What a bird!

That was a perfect day….hunting with your family in the great outdoors!
