Northport Systems to Distribute Bad Elf Real-Time GPS Accessories in Canada

The Bad Elf GPS (left) plugs into the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad to enable satellite GPS, while the Bad Elf GPS Pro (right) operates independently to wirelessly connect (via Bluetooth) up to five users who can share real time GPS data – anywhere.

Bad Elf, manufacturer of Apple-approved accessories that enable the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad to receive real time GPS data on board via satellite, has appointed Northport Systems, Inc. to distribute the Bad Elf product line in Canada.

Headquartered in Toronto, Northport Systems is a leading supplier of GPS-related products for marine navigation. The company also supplies desktop, mobile and web-based navigation software products under its own Fugawi brand.

Bad Elf GPS does not rely on cell tower assistance to achieve a lock or to determine position. The Bad Elf units include a high performance satellite receiver and antenna that receive data directly from the GPS satellites. Locking on to up to 15 satellites, a Bad Elf unit supplies GPS data up to 10 times a second that can be accurate to within 9 feet (2.5 meters). This also means users will improve their GPS lock on the water beyond cell phone coverage areas.

The Bad Elf GPS (BE-GPS-1000) plugs into iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad 30-pin connector to enable satellite GPS, while the small and compact handheld Bad Elf GPS Pro (BE-GPS-2200) operates independently to wirelessly connect (via Bluetooth wireless technology) up to five users who can share real time GPS data for display on digital charts and a wide range of other compatible marine apps. The GPS Pro was the winner of the TechRadar Best GPS Device award at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show.

Polartec Redefines Insulation with Alpha Synthetic Material

November 14, 2012

Polartec Introduced Alpha Synthetic Insulation Redefining the Material

Polartec, the developer, manufacturer, and marketer of Polartec performance fabrics, introduces Polartec Alpha synthetic insulation and continues its streak of product innovation with a focus on breathability and versatility in performance textiles.

Unlike down and existing synthetic insulation batting, Polartec Alpha is a highly stable layer allowing for the use of more open and breathable fabrics on the outer and inner layers of “puffy” style garments. As a result, Polartec Alpha provides active warmth that allows air exchange for breathability and comfort in more dynamic situations. Classic puffy garments require “down-proof” or high-density woven layers that create a vapor barrier. Although they work well in static conditions, these classic puffy garments trap moisture inside the garment during even minimal activity.

In addition to unprecedented levels of breathability and moisture vapor transport in a puffy, Polartec Alpha maintains insulation values while wet and offers dramatically faster dry times than existing puffy-style fabrics on the market. Highly compressible, it also provides inherent wind resistance and warmth without weight.

Polartec Alpha was developed to meet the performance requirements of the U. S. Special Operations Forces (SOF). SOF required something that was warm, wind resistant, highly durable, quick drying and more breathable than any existing insulation products. Polartec was able to tune the performance characteristics of Alpha to meet the extraordinary demands placed upon clothing by Special Forces Operators. In testing by SOF, Alpha received the highest results of any Polartec product ever tested by the evaluation team. Polartec Alpha jackets are in production and are being fielded to every Special Forces Operator. Alpha is now rolling out to the consumer market and will be introduced at the January 2013 Outdoor Retailer, SIA and ISPO trade shows and available at retail by September 2013.

“Polartec Alpha is a natural compliment to our existing layering system fabrics. It will function as outerwear or as an ideal mid layer under fabrics like Polartec Power Shield Pro or Polartec NeoShell. It packs small and can quickly recover from something as catastrophic as getting completely soaked while in the field,” states Allon Cohne, Polartec Director of Marketing. “This is a never-let-you-down active warmth product that will replace other layers, lighten the load and increase comfort in the field for outdoor enthusiasts.”

Brands adopting Polartec Alpha for the initial launch include: 66º North, Eddie Bauer, Eider, Mammut, Marmot, Montane, Mountain Equipment, Rab, Ternua, Terry Cycle, The North Face, Trangoworld, Vaude and Westcomb. The consumer launch will continue in Spring 2014 with a number of additional adoptions already confirmed.

High-tech, Low-cost Dryer and Deodorizer for Smelly, Wet Boots

October 11, 2012

High-technology, Low-cost Dryer and Deodorizer for Smelly Wet Boots

The drying and deodorizing electronic shoe insert produced by French company Sidas Sport has been marketed to a number of demographics. The fact of the matter is, the insert, called the Drywarmer, is not restricted to just one industry.

The Drywarmer is a high-tech device for drying your shoes from the inside. Two inserts that look like futuristic computer mice are placed inside the wet and potentially smelly shoe. The Drywarmer must be plugged in to an electrical outlet to work and when switched on, it warms to a temperature of 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 Celsius), while emitting UV light at the same time. The warm temperature dries the shoe, while the UV light acts as an antibacterial agent. Similar to UV water purification systems, the light kills the bacteria that favor the damp conditions of your wet shoe.

Sidas markets the product toward winter sports enthusiasts–namely, skiers and snowboarders. The British magazine Grough suggests that the Drywarmer is good for everyday use as a resident of notoriously soggy Great Britain, while we at Outdoor Hub see its benefit for hunters and hikers who go out into damp weather, or walk through puddles/bog during a day hunt or hike. The only downfall is that the inserts are not portable. An electrical outlet is necessary to power it, meaning it would still be good for the hunter who comes home from the rain at night.

The Drywarmer sells for $30 to $35 in the United States.
