Henny Youngman Might Say, “Take My Wolves…..Please!”
January 21, 2008
It might be an understatement to say that there’s a conflict brewing between U.S. Congressman George Miller of California and U.S. Congressman Don Young of Alaska. The battle stems from issues over wolf management in Alaska.
The state of Alaska, under the direction of the Alaska Board of Game and with the approval of Gov. Sarah Palin, is using aircraft to reduce the wolf population in specific areas where they are destroying the moose and caribou herds that supply native Alaskans with food. Animal lovers don’t like this and have been fighting the effort for some time. One of the radical groups involved is Defenders of Wildlife, of which it appears that Mr. Miller is a strong advocate for.
Rep. Miller is also the sponsor of HR3663(pdf), the misleading “Protect America’s Wildlife Act of 2007″, which is being promoted as a bill to stop aerial hunting of wolves. Read more
What Are They Talking About? Predators Have No Effect On Elk Populations!
January 21, 2008
This can’t be true! If you read or listen to what the lovers of predators have to say, these scavenging, murdering animals we call predators have no real affect on wild ungulate herds, other than what they believe to be selective harvesting of the weak and disabled and making the preyed upon become “more wild”. This is where we would insert the Disney theme song of “When you wish upon a star. Makes no difference who you are.” La, la, la, la…….
Okay, so I’m feeling a bit nasty and cynical this morning. And with that I’m taking a story and making an attempt to spin it into something bigger and more controversial than it really is but I do have a point to make. Read more

Cabela’s Giving Money To Montana For Land Access
January 18, 2008
Hat Tip to the Newshound!
Cabela’s Trophy Properties, a real estate company owned and operated by Cabela’s, the sporting world retail giant, is attempting to give money to the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks department to be used for hunting land access. Why?
For some time moaning, groaning and outright anger has been expressed by some Montana sportsmen who claim that Cabela’s real estate company is taking hunting and fishing land away from them. Cabela’s Trophy Properties works with contracted real estate brokers to market valuable ranch land in parts of Montana for upwards of $6 million. The problem, say some sportsmen, is this land is sometimes being bought up and shut down and some say Cabela’s is marketing the land to encourage buyers to turn it into private hunting grounds. Bush Administration’s Brief A “Terrible Mistake”
January 17, 2008
Just when lovers of liberty thought that Second Amendment issues were making a turn for the better in this country, lawyers for the Bush Administration may have set efforts back to Clinton era days.
Last year an Appeals Court ruled that the current gun ban in Washington, D.C. was unconstitutional, a ruling that put huge smiles on gun rights promoters across this free country. In Washington, D.C. it is against the law to possess a handgun and any ownership of a rifle or shotgun must be stored in such a way that it is rendered useless. Obviously D.C. doesn’t believe its people have a right to self defense. Read more
Wyoming Senator Has Few Choice Words For Fellow Congressmen
January 17, 2008
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service intends to remove the gray wolf from protected status of the Endangered Species Act perhaps by spring. A group of five from the House Natural Resources Committee sent a letter to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne asking him to postpone that decision.
Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso had a few choice words for the group of five.
“This is an issue that directly affects the lives of Wyoming ranchers, energy producers and sportsmen. It has a direct impact on Wyoming livestock and wildlife, not Washington’s. These congressmen don’t even live in our time zone. They have no concept of the damage gray wolves do.”
The five signing the letter were Natural Resources Committee Chair Nick Rahall D-W. Va., Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., Rep. Jim Saxton R-N.J; and Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, R-Md.

New Hampshire F&G Audit Report Suggests Changing To Reflect “Constituency Now Served”
January 15, 2008
Below is the press release issued by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department concerning its latest audit of efficiency. I have highlighted one area of which I will comment on below.
CONCORD, NH — At its monthly meeting today, the Fiscal Committee accepted the Office of the Legislative Budget Assistant Audit Division’s Performance Audit Report of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
According to the report, the purpose and scope of the audit was to “assess the efficiency and effectiveness” of the N.H. Fish and Game Department. The report concludes that New Hampshire state government has assigned responsibilities to the Fish and Game Department in an efficient and effective manner. The report contains 30 observations that address a wide variety of issues, including governance matters associated with the Fish and Game Commission, strategic and operational planning, revenue generation, organizational structure within the Department, and fleet management and controls. Due to the financial situation of the Department, the audit focused on the program areas most dependent on unrestricted revenues. Read more
Wisconsin Considering A Wolf Hunting Season
January 15, 2008
The Wisconsin Conservation Congress seems to be testing the waters a bit by seeking input from residents on the prospects of offering a wolf hunt, partly in efforts to slow down the growth of the animal and keep human encounters and livestock damages to a minimum. Nothing being proposed is binding.
Last year the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared the wolf fully recovered in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan and removed the wolf there from the list of endangered animals. None of the states currently offer wolf hunts and they still protect them through state mandates. Read more
National Heritage Areas Stealing Your Property And Limiting Your Rights
January 14, 2008
I have written some here at the Black Bear Blog and Blogging the Maine Outdoors about National Heritage Areas. Just last week, I wrote an article at Blogging the Maine Outdoors about a summit which also took place last week at the Sunday River Ski Resort. That summit was to discuss the economic impact of trails to Maine’s economy.
Maine Gov. John Baldacci has been pushing for more promotion of Maine’s natural resources and appears to be an advocate for the establishment of more “preserved” lands including National Heritage Areas. Part of this summit at Sunday River was to discuss the prospects of mapping and inventorying lands and waterways in order to protect them. Included in that process was to tap into federal money available to protect these lands through National Heritage Areas. Read more

After a little internet searching, reading, and checking up on this stuff I found its a pretty well established product in Canada and hails from Quebec where they have this funny habit of speaking a lot of French. Thus the name, Jig-A-Loo, and the companys claim it derives from a saying they have up north, Ive got it!
