This was one of my most satisfying hunts ever. I am a kind of topo and aerial map junky. I spend a great deal of time on the off season looking over maps searching for new funnels and pinch points in big buck country. Last winter I thought I found such a spot about 2.5 miles back of the south side of a mountain in Norway, Maine. However I still had not worked up the ambition to walk the dirt.

Friday I was planning on heading to camp in Andover after school. Nate, Devon and I were going to find snow on Saturday. So I had the Arctic Cat loaded up and was going to head there after hunting locally Friday evening. Since I already had the wheeler handy, I opted to head for this new spot. I took the 4 wheeler as far as I could and then hiked another 25 minutes to find the spot.

When I got there it was better than I had hoped. 3 major draws came together and I could overlook all three and the back side of a swamp. I built a little ground nest and settled in. About 30 minutes later I noticed a head sticking out the side of a tree about 150 yards out. It was a doe and she then came out and bedded down. Can you say live bait? 30 minutes later I glanced back to check on the doe and noticed a big buck headed my way. I settled in and steadied my crosshairs. The deer only ran about 30 yards.

I hiked out to get some help. I was able to reach Devon and Chris Calise. It took us 4 hours to get the deer out. It was very rewarding to try to figure out a buck and then see that deer in the flesh. This to me is hunting in it’s purest form.
