Just more than 10 years ago, Maine’s moose population was estimated to be at 29,000 based on the wildlife department’s aerial surveys. This year, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (DIFW) announced that an aerial survey determined an estimate of about 75,000 moose, more than double the previous estimation.
This past winter, DIFW Biologist Lee Kantar conducted an aerial survey in a low-flying helicopter for the second straight year. Kantar was able to survey nine of the 12 hunting districts accurately because of ideal clear conditions. Moose roam in large numbers in those districts.
“The technique of flying the helicopter is a statistically reliable technique. It gives us a finer level of detail than we had in the past. And conditions were perfect, with low wind. It’s a great success story,” Kantar said to the Portland Press Herald.
This means that DIFW may award more moose permits in future years, but the lottery drawing for this year is already over. This year, 3,725 permits were allotted, just 137 less than last year. The 3,862 permits issued last year resulted in a total harvest of 2,582 moose.
These new numbers would make Maine the state with the largest moose population in the lower 48 states. The latest moose estimates in Montana reported 6,000 moose, Wyoming reported 13,500 and Minnesota 12,000. Combined, those three states don’t come close to Maine’s population total. Alaska continues to have the highest population in United States, with an estimated 200,000 in a 2011 count.

The Pope and Young Club will be a key sponsor for this year’s National Hunting and Fishing Day, the official federal commemoration of hunters, anglers and conservation.
NHF Day continues to grow and reach new outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen each year with the continued support of generous sponsors. Through licenses, permits and special taxes, hunters and anglers generate $100,000 every 30 minutes—totaling more than $1.75 billion per year—for fish, wildlife and habitat. No one contributes more for conservation.
NHF Day is set to take place Sept. 22, 2012.
The sponsorship by the Pope and Young Club supports the Wonders of Wildlife museum—the official home of National Hunting and Fishing Day. The Springfield, Mo., facility oversees educational initiatives to help the American public understand the indelible relationship between hunting, angling, healthy habitat, and wildlife and fisheries conservation.
Each year National Hunting and Fishing Day chooses an honorary chairperson, and this year NASCAR Sprint Cup driver/owner Tony Stewart is serving in that capacity and will deliver the message of NHF Day.
As the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Stewart has won 12 driving championships, including three Sprint Cup Series titles, in a career spanning more than three decades.
Stewart is a champion off the racetrack as much as he is on, and has been recognized for his philanthropic efforts via his Tony Stewart Foundation, which raises funds for distribution to three specific groups – chronically ill children, drivers injured in motorsports activities, and organizations dedicated to the protection of various animal species.
“Our mission is to ensure that bowhunting will continue to prosper through future generations, and the Pope and Young Club is proud to continue our support of National Hunting and Fishing Day,” said P&Y President Roger Atwood. “NHF Day is a great opportunity to remind folks of the many cultural values that the hunting lifestyle provides, including patience, perseverance, skill development and mastery, the value of practice, applying personal ethics, and woodcrafts, as well as a true understanding and appreciation of the natural world.”
“The Pope and Young Club has been a proponent of conservation from the day it was created,” said Misty Mitchell, director of Conservation Programs, Wonders of Wildlife. “They are exactly why NHF Day is such a big day for sportsmen around the country. Through our combined efforts we will continue to conserve our heritage.”
In 1972, Congress formalized NHF Day to remind the public that conservation depends on funding and leadership from hunters and anglers. Every president from Richard Nixon through Barack Obama has issued official proclamations of support for the annual commemoration, now recognized as one of the most effective grassroots campaigns ever undertaken to promote traditional outdoor sports.
The growing list of sponsors for NHF Day 2012 includes Wonders of Wildlife, NSSF, Bass Pro Shops, Smith & Wesson, Sportsman’s Channel, Realtree, GunBroker.com, Yamaha, Pope and Young Club, North American Media Group, Inc, Ducks Unlimited and the Izaak Walton League of America.

Avery’s show business partner, Ryan Fortier, owner of Long Hollow Retrievers, says: “My true passion for waterfowl hunting remains central to my passion for working with hunting dogs.”
The Honey Brake Experience, award-winning reality theater produced in association with MOOSE Media and Starkville, Mississippi-based Broadcast Media, is next at 6:30P. Catering to the ever-changing needs of the hunting market, Lone Wolf introduces their NEW 16ft Ladder Stick for 2012. Consisting of four individual 4-foot sections that lock together creating a single, 16-foot ladder stick, this new climbing option, weighing in at only 12.5 lb., allows users the added convenience of setting up on the ground prior to tree attachment.
“We know our current climbing sticks are a favorite of mobile hunters nationwide,” said Jared Schlipf, President of Lone Wolf Treestands. “but the new 16 foot Ladder Stick brings a certain level of comfort and convenience that many hunters are looking for without sacrificing the lightweight, mobile design that Lone Wolf is known for.”
Keeping with Lone Wolf’s noted design ingenuity, the individual 4-foot sections nest together and mount easily to the Lone Wolf Hang On stands; perfect for packing in to unknown territory. And, with the ease of pre-setting the Ladder Stick on the ground, users can mount to the tree, climb and set the stand all in one single trip rather than multiple trips up and down the tree. The single tube design allows the Ladder Stick to match the slight changes in contour of tree’s trunk.
“Lots of folks find they’re ‘stuck’ in a stand when the wind suddenly changes or deer patterns shift and they don’t want to make a quick stand change, “ added Schlipf. “Users are now going to find it’s no problem taking their set down, moving their stick, in one piece, short distances across the valley, ridge or downwind side of the trail and be back in action in a matter of minutes. It’s that easy to use and it WILL change the way they hunt.”
- Stick length: 48”
- Distance between steps: 15”

Arnsberg, Germany based PW Group, owners of shooting sports companies, CARL WALTHER GmbH Sportwaffen and Umarex, announce the formation of Walther Arms, Inc. to handle all the importation, sales, marketing, distribution and servicing of Walther products in the United States. The transition will occur in two phases beginning January 1, 2013. Previously, Smith & Wesson held responsibility for the distribution of Walther firearms and accessories in the United States. On January 1, that responsibility will be handled by the newly formed Walther Arms, Inc. with the exception of the Walther P22 and PK380 models, which Smith & Wesson will continue to sell and distribute through April 30, 2013.
Walther and Smith & Wesson will maintain their strategic alliance on several fronts—Smith & Wesson will continue to manufacture the PPK for Walther Arms, Inc. and CARL WALTHER will continue to manufacture the M&P22 handgun for S&W. Additionally, Umarex will continue to license the Smith & Wesson brand for airgun products. “We are extremely thankful for the relationship we have had and will continue to have with the quality organization of Smith & Wesson,” said Wulf-Heinz Pflaumer, President of PW Group. “Smith & Wesson has been an outstanding partner and has represented the Walther brand in the U.S. with tremendous focus, effort and results. We look forward to many more years of strategic alliance with Smith & Wesson.”
“We are excited about the formation of our new company, Walther Arms, Inc. It will allow us to intensify our focus on the U.S. firearms market,” said Pflaumer. The Walther brand is a legend in the firearms industry with a rich history of design, innovation and outstanding German manufacturing. “Walther is known throughout the world as a leader in handgun innovation and quality. The new U.S. based Walther Arms allows a more direct influence from the U.S. consumer’s wants and needs into our product development.” said Karl Heinz-Luther, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, CARL WALTHER GmbH Sportwaffen.
Walther Arms, Inc. will begin operations sharing a corporate campus in Fort Smith, Arkansas with Umarex USA, another company in the PW Group. Adam J. Blalock has been named President & CEO of Walther Arms, Inc. and will also remain as President & CEO of Umarex USA. “We are extremely grateful for the way Smith & Wesson has represented Walther and we look forward to our continued relationship with them”, said Blalock, “We will have a dedicated team focused on meeting the needs of U.S. consumers with high quality, innovative products worthy of the Walther brand. We are very thankful for the many loyal Walther customers and we’re excited for the opportunity to serve them.”

The U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee today approved the fiscal year 2013 Interior and Environment Appropriations bill that includes $7.5 million to expand and enhance access for hunting, fishing and recreational shooting on U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Bureau of Land Management lands. Securing this funding has been a priority for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) along with partner organizations such as the Boone and Crockett Club, NRA, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and others.
If included in the final appropriations measure, the funding will allow the Forest Service and BLM to acquire rights-of-way and other land interests from willing-seller landowners to open access to existing federal lands for hunting and fishing where it is closed or significantly restricted.
“The biggest challenge facing hunters and shooters is diminishing access to public lands. This important appropriations provision addresses this challenge head-on, and the NSSF is deeply grateful to Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers and Interior Subcommittee Chairman Mike Simpson for championing this cause,” said Larry Keane, senior vice president and general counsel of NSSF, the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry.
Boone and Crockett Club Chairman Bob Model praised Chairman Simpson for “his longstanding and deep commitment to enhancing hunting opportunities on our public lands.”
For the 32 million American hunters, anglers and recreational shooters, federal public lands are increasingly vital to their participation in outdoor sports. Nearly half of all hunters, for example, pursue their passion on public lands. Reduced access is repeatedly cited as the primary reason that hunters, anglers and recreational shooters stop participating in these sports.
A 2004 report to the House Committee on Appropriations concluded that more than 35 million acres of BLM and Forest Service land have inadequate access. Specifically, nearly 2 million acres (or 10 percent) of Forest Service lands in Montana and 8.4 million acres (or 29 percent) of BLM lands in the Montana/Dakotas region were identified as having inadequate access.
Sportsmen and women make important contributions to both wildlife conservation and the nation’s economy. The hunting and shooting sports industry creates 210,000 jobs nationwide, generating an economic benefit of nearly $32 billion annually.
“If ultimately appropriated, this public-access funding will serve as another weapon in our arsenal as we continue to work on behalf of our nation’s hunting and shooting heritage,” said Keane.
